Dhikr (remembering Allah) is the most excellent and praiseworthy act of worship through which servants of Allah seek His nearness. It is the most effective weapon and easy way to achieve victories and defeat the enemies. Allah says in the Holy Quran: “O you who believe! When you meet (an enemy) force, take a firm stand against them and remember the Name of Allah much (both with tongue and mind), so that you may be successful.” (Al-Anfal 8:45)

It is the most deserving of deeds in reward. Allah Commands His slaves to remember Him, glorify Him in the morning/evening and remember Him at every stage of being and in every position: standing, sitting or lying down on their sides. It is a fact that in the remembrance of Allah, hearts find satisfaction and the agonies are driven out. Allah says: “Those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah – Islamic Monotheism), and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah, Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest.” (Ar-Rad 13:28)

Remembering Allah fills the heart with happiness and pleasure and makes the face look brighter. Allah remembers those who remember Him. He says: “Therefore remember Me (by praying, glorifying, etc.). I will remember you,” (Al-Baqarah 2:152)

The Prophet (PBUH) also urged his Ummah to remember Allah. It is narrated from Abu Musa (May Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “The example of the one who remembers (glorify the Praises of) his Lord (Allah) in comparison to the one who does not remember (glorify the Praises of) his Lord, is that of a living creature compared to a dead one.” (Al-Bukhari 6407)

There are some certain supplications that if a person recites them according to the time and numbers mentioned by the Prophet (PBUH), will have protection against Satan. The following supplication is one of them. It is narrated from Abu Ayyash that the Prophet (PBUH) said: “Whoever says in the morning: Laa ilaaha illalaahu wahdahu laa sharika lahu, lahul-mulku wa lahujl-hamdu, wa Huwa ‘ala kuli shay‘in Qadir (None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, with no partner or associate. His is the dominion and all praise is to Him, and He is Able to do all things), one hundred times, he will have (a reward) equal to freeing a slave among the sons of Ismail AS, ten bad deeds will be erased from (his record), he will be raised (in status) ten degrees, and he will have protection against Satan until evening comes. When evening comes, (if he says likewise) he will have the same until morning comes.”(Ibn Majah 3867). Similarly, there are many other Ahadith proclaiming the superiority of dhikr over all other good deeds.

There are many benefits of dhikr (remembering Allah) and the following are some of them:

–          It keeps away the Satan and weakens his strength.

–          It relieves the mind from anxieties and worries.\

–          It strengthens the body and mind/

–          It attracts one’s sustenance.
